Tried & True (No Really, It Is)
Over three graduation seasons, I had the joy of photographing more than 100 seniors at The University of Texas at Austin. That's like a lot of steps back and forth across campus.
Each photo session, I meticulously planned the most time-efficient route across the forty acres.
So, let me save you some time as you plan yours!
Here's my number one tip: start your session at your northern most location and work south to finish with your grand finale at the fountain.
"Meet me at the steps closest to the tower!"
This is not only the easiest meeting spot (because who doesn't know where the tower is), but there are so many wonderful photo opportunities packed into such a small area.
The ledge
On either side of the main steps, there are walls that enclose the tower. This is my favorite place to take some "warm-up" shots!
gardens
Depending on the season, the tower has beautiful greenery and flowers all around! Walk down the ramps, pose near the blooms, or stop and smell the roses.
arches
You can't go wrong with a photo under or in front of the iconic tower arches!
steps
Sit down and take a load off! Each section of the tower steps offers a new perspective of the infamous building.
Take a Look Inside
Head inside to change your outfit or take some pictures on the gorgeous staircases inside the tower.
There is no shortage of beauty here!
I'd definitely recommend using a flash on your camera here—the natural lighting on these stairs is not always reliable and consistent.

Next, You Have Some Options
Depending on the weather, which flowers are in season, and what look you desire for your photos, you have a few choices.
EAST TOWER GARDENS
If the bluebonnets are in bloom, then this is a must. But, even if they aren't, you can't go wrong with a quick detour to the garden area just east of the main building. You can even get a beautiful shot of the whole tower here!
the blue door
This infamous door is just west of the tower steps! Beat the line by scheduling your session earlier in your grad season. As the weeks go on, the line at this spot can be over a 20 minute wait!
The Architecture Courtyard
A classic. After covering all of the spots near the base of the tower, head to the architecture courtyard by walking west of the tower. Don't worry, we'll come back to the lower steps of the tower after this iconic pit stop.
The gate
You can't enter into the courtyard without walking through its iconic blue gates! Snap some photos here on your way in, or wait until you're on your way out if there is a long line.
glass window
Inside the courtyard, there is a beautiful window you just have to take photos in front of! One of my favorite poses here is "walking the runway" down the path in front of it.
cherry blossoms
For one week in mid-late February, there are the most gorgeous cherry blossom trees blooming in the courtyard.
Don't blink or you'll miss them!
Maggie's Favorite
On your way back to the lower tower steps, you'll come across a blue door on the side of one of the architecture buildings. This random door became one of my favorite pitstops while the infamous "blue door" was under construction.
Longhorn Nation...
We're Baaaack
And just like that, we are back at the lower tower steps! Here is the perfect place to get some shots with the entire tower behind you.
In a photo session, I'm all about optimizing our time, which means minimizing our walking steps. I like to do this area after those adjacent to the tower because it truly saves so much time!
The Six-Pack
As you start making your way down to the fountain, there are a few stops along the six pack that are worth checking out.
THE TOWER LAWN
Another classic. You can't go wrong with a photo on or around the tower lawn!
classrooms
Showcase your personality with a classroom shot! Parlin has historically been the easiest to access and find empty classrooms to use.
courtyards
In between most of the buildings on the six-pack, you'll find small courtyards, walkways, and beautiful arches.
Before the Grand Finale
The fountain is always your last spot (you're lucky if you make it out of there mostly dry). Before hopping in, make sure you've covered all your bases!
mccombs
Did you really graduate with a business degree if you didn't take a picture in front of McCombs?
flower beds
Right across from the fountain! During busy season, the line here can be monstrous.
the stadium
This one is a bit of a walk, so plan wisely, however, the view of the emblem on the NE corner of DKR is gorgeous.
Another One of Maggie's Favorites
There's more to Littlefield Fountain than just jumping in the chilly water! The gardens and flower beds around this area are beautiful and deserve their moment too.
Pop the Champagne!
It's time for your grand finale!!!
Turn on some tunes, hop in the water, and have some fun!
Honorable Mentions
There are just too many good spots on the forty acres.
Again, as you plan your route, I would recommend that you begin at your northern most location and work your way south.
engineering building (eer)
You didn't spend endless hours inside this building to not take some photos with the outside!
law building
This is definitely a drive-to location instead of walking, but if you are a law grad, this is a must.
blanton museum
There are so many gorgeous spots at and near Blanton. You can't go wrong with this one!
gearing courtyard
You've got to if you are a SOHE grad! From the iconic gate to the courtyard itself, there is no lack of beauty at Gearing.
